Tomatoes

Heirloom Beefsteak
Types I've Tried
  • Beefsteak is the kind you find in the store and has a great flavor. I recommend this for beginner tomato growers.
  • If you want an even stronger, more acidic flavor than Beefsteak, try Rutgers or Celebrity.
  • Cherokee Purple is a milder tomato that grows quite large.
Pet Friendly?
  • No. Tomato plants are toxic to pets.

Starting Seeds

Buying the already-started plant from a nursery is good too.  :)

Required: Warmth, light, water, soil, container.
  • 64º-78ºF (18º-25ºC)
  • Florescent Bulbs
  • Keep Moist | Misting Spray Bottle, Water Bottle w/ Small Holes in Cap, Bottom Watering
  • Tray, Egg Carton,

Test 1: Spinach (Failure)
  • 1 seed planted in a halved water bottle and watered every other day.
  • Used soil from my garden mixed with sand.
  • Got excited when a sprout popped up, but it was a weed carried over with the garden soil.  Its corpse is still in my shed.
Test 2: Spinach (Failure)
  • 4 seeds planted in a small 4-part flat using garden soil mixed with sand.
  • Set in an area that gets indirect sunlight and watered thoroughly every morning.
  • They drowned.
Test 3: Nasturtium & Marigold (Success)
Marigold Sprout
  • 4 seeds planted in a small 4-part flat using moistened Schultz Potting Soil Plus mixed with perlite.
  • Set in a window in a warm room (computer room) that gets 5 hours of sun a day.
  • Covered with the top part of a gallon milk jug (makeshift greenhouse) and spritzed with a spray bottle to moisten the top of the soil every morning.
  • 3 of 4 sprouted: both marigolds and one nasturtium. Nasturtium came up leggy.
Test 4: Tomatoes, Green Beans, Cucumber, Squash (In Progress)
  • 6 seeds.  4 planted in egg shells, 2 planted in halved toilet paper tubes.  Wrote name of seed on shell/tube.  Watered soil thoroughly to moisten before planting seeds.
  • Set a grow light close to the containers.
  • Soil seems to dry out quickly thanks to light.  Spritzing 2 times a day to try and keep moist.  Put bottom part of cut gallon milk jug over egg shells, hoping for a greenhouse effect.
Test 5: Tomatoes & Green Beans (In Progress)
Prepping the Soil
  • 10 seeds planted in a halved cardboard egg carton (6 pods).
  • Mixed Schultz Potting Soil Plus with a handful of perlite and filled the carton pods.
  • Watered thoroughly to moisten and let sit for an hour as excess water drained off (soaks through the carton, put something under it).
  • Set in a window in a warm room (computer room) that gets 5 hours of sun a day.
  • Covered with the top part of a gallon milk jug (makeshift greenhouse) and spritzed with a spray bottle to moisten the top of the soil every morning.
